the 4 things to learn

Warren Rustand is an exceptional human, and I am grateful for every moment I get to spend with him.  I am also grateful that he has taken the time to speak to others and share this wisdom.  That he has refined his craft, and become an even more effective leader.  A leader of leaders.  In a recording I saw today, he spoke about a conversation he had with Clark, his son, as Clark asked him what he wanted to learn in life.  After Warren had a chance to think about it, he answered in this way:
There are 4 things I want you to learn in life:
  1. Learn to love.  Love those around you.  Love those you meet, engage with and interact with.  Love them all.
  2. Learn to learn.  Life is ever changing.  Things come, they go, they adapt, and they change.  You will have to do the same.
  3. Learn to serve.  We are all on this journey together, and when you serve others, take care of others, and help them get what they want, they will help you get what you want.
  4. Learn to become.  Everything we do is part of our journey.  There is only one destination, and everything else is a milestone on the path.  Every milestone prepares you for the next part of the journey.  We all have ups and downs, and the more you become, the more you can do.
This is an amazingly simple strategy and framework for success in life.  My thought of a purposeful life has been someone to love, meaningful work, and a cause to embrace.  This goes hand in hand with the above.  They fit together, are complementary, and are actionable.
If you learn to love, you can love everyone.
By learning to learn, you can always improve.
By learning to serve, you create and participate in meaningful work.
By learning to become, you can embrace a cause and lift it higher.
This is a framework that can help you create a more meaningful existence.  That can help you through the dark times, the tough times, the ups and the downs, the lumpiness of life.  There is nothing easy about this journey, nor should there be.  The struggle makes it all worthwhile.
